Weekend trip to New Orleans with family…where to stay, what to avoid

I have to be in New Orleans at the end of the month and will have the family with me. What are good, safe locations to stay and what areas/hotels should I avoid?

Bonus points: family friendly things to do other than WWII museum.

The natives are restless in this heat. They hear the war drums and run wild.

I would avoid New Orleans in general.

Staying in downtown area/warehouse district, Uptown/St Charles, magazine, also City Park/MidCity areas...etc are fine.

I wouldn't go near the intersection of Bourbon and Canal at night especially on the weekend.

This. And there are tons of properties to choose from. Just depends what kind of hotel you are looking for and if you want to be within walking distance of certain things.

As for what to do, it stinks that you are coming during the jungle hot season, but the zoo, aquarium, or City Park are nice options.
For City Park, go look at their website. There is a lot to do out there and there is also a Cafe Du Monde there. It beats the hell out of dealing with the one downtown.

A morning or afternoon at the Aquarium followed by a ferry ride to/from Algiers Point would make for a nice time with the kids (not sure ages or anything)

If they are younger, Children’s Museum in City Park would also be a good option.

When we went a few years ago, we stayed at the Westin on top of Canal Place. Was super convenient to everything. But I think last year there was a shooting right outside the building on Canal, so not sure if it's a good place to stay or not.

We enjoyed the aquarium and insectarium (I think it has closed/been moved into the aquarium now). Also Madri Gras World, the museums on either side of St. Louis Cathedral. We did a tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1. It was interesting, but hot as balls (week after Memorial Day) with the sun reflecting off the white stone.

I think one of the river boats goes down to Chalmette and drops you off for a tour of the Battle of New Orleans battlefield, and then brings you back.

How old are the kids?

If under 8 there is no better place than storyland/carousel gardens in city park. The children’s museum is also in city park. Kids as old as 12 can enjoy carousel gardens but it definitely caters to the wee ones.

If kids are older than a show at preservation hall should be on the short list.
